Snow across the Alps! 29th Oct 12 There’s been over half a metre of fresh snow in parts of the Alps this weekend – and there’s more to come
On Friday it started off as heavy rain with snow falling only at altitude, it then turned to snow on Saturday down to about 1200 metres and on Sunday there was thick snow in many ski resorts.
It has been snowing in Morzine, Verbier, Avoriaz, Val d'Isere, Engleberg, Ischgl, Solden and pretty much every resort across the Alps.
The forecast is for more snow from Wednesday. But it’s going to come in on milder air, so it won’t fall down to the valley floor. In France, Meteo Chamonix reckons the snow/rain line will hover around 2000m.
There has been heavy snow in North America too over recent days.
In Canada the first resort has opened for the season.
Mt Norquay opened a slope on Thursday after the opening date was brought forward by almost two weeks.
The biggest snowfall though has been in California with wellover half a metre.
Boreal opened on Friday and in nearby Kirkwood 55cm has fallen at the top of the mountain and 40cm at resort level. back to news
